Where the money goes

Here's the best-value January trip for a couple, split by part:

Return flights with bags£930£465
Hotels in Makkah and Madinah£607£304
Haramain train£70£35
Saudi eVisa and airport taxis£300£150

Hotels: Leader Al Muna Kareem and Kiswah Towers Hotel. Hotels are the biggest cost and the part you control most: choosing a hotel 500 m from the Haram instead of 100 m can save hundreds of pounds per person.

From Manchester and Birmingham

From Manchester a quiet-month trip starts from about £994 per person for a couple, and from Birmingham about £970. Only London and Manchester have direct flights to Saudi Arabia, so from Birmingham, Edinburgh or Glasgow it's sometimes cheaper to take the train to Manchester or London and fly direct.

Doing it yourself vs a package

Booking each part yourself is usually cheaper than an agency package, because you pay no markup and choose exactly where to save. Packages can make sense for first-timers, large groups or elderly parents who want someone to handle everything. If you buy a package, check it's ATOL protected.

Five ways to pay less

  • Avoid Ramadan, school holidays and the two weeks around Christmas if you can.
  • Be flexible by a few days: prices for the same trip can differ by hundreds of pounds a week apart.
  • Compare Madinah-first and Makkah-first: flying into one city and home from the other is often cheaper.
  • Pick a hotel 300 to 500 m from the mosque instead of the closest towers.
  • Check your bag allowance. A cheap fare without a checked bag can end up dearer.
